Erin Smith: Burning Neural Circuits – The Acts of Daily Formation

In this seventh annual “Evangelical Voices in the Academy” lecture, Dr. Erin Smith dives into the neurological and psychological reasons our brains form habits.

Dr. Smith is California Baptist University’s Fletcher Jones Endowed Professor of Research and a professor of psychology. Trained as a developmental psychologist, Smith’s expertise lies at the intersection of developmental and cognitive psychology with interest in science and Christianity. Her published work explores church as a cultural context for child development, practices of effective church children’s ministry, understanding Christian (dis)engagement with science, and psychological contributions to theological anthropology. She was a Scholarship on Christianity in Oxford Visiting Scholar in Science and Religion at Wycliff Hall, Oxford University (2015-2016) as part of the Bridging the Two Cultures of Science and the Humanities Program. She is currently the Vice President of the CBU Campus Chapter for the American Scientific Affiliation and has served as a science advisor in seminaries since 2019 as part of the Science for Seminaries program, a project of AAAS’ Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion. In the 2022-2023 academic year, she is serving as a scholar in residence at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. More information is available at erinsmithpsychology.com.
