“Leadership in War” | Chuck Lawless’ Summer Reading Recommendation

Post Icon

This summer, we want to help you craft the perfect Summer Reading List. We asked Southeastern Seminary professors what books they would recommend, and we’ll share their recommendations in coming weeks.

Today, Chuck Lawless shares his summer reading recommendation.

Leadership in War: Essential Lessons from Those Who Made History
By Andrew Roberts (Viking, 2019)

Lawless: I picked up this book because Albert Mohler recommended it for leaders. It is a look at the leadership of nine significant leaders in times of war (Napoleon Bonaparte, Horatio Nelson, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, George C. Marshall, Charles de Gaulle, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Margaret Thatcher), including their strengths and weaknesses.

Because I love to learn from history and biography while always filtering everything through the lens of Scripture, I have included this book in my summer reading. I’m actually reading it alongside J. Oswald Sanders’ Spiritual Leadership, which has provided a good balance
