Update

We've pushed back the abstract submission date to Friday, October 13! Submit your abstract now to be considered for the contest.

What challenges do we face as human beings? How does our faith inform our understanding of mental health, identity, technology, life, and civic engagement? The L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture is proud to announce Exploring Personhood: Challenges to Humanity — our third annual Exploring Personhood conference designed to address these important questions.

In conjunction with this conference, we invite submissions of abstracts on topics relevant to the conference’s theme.

To be considered, please submit a title, abstract (no longer than 250 words), and a CV to [email protected] by Friday, October 13, 2023. Judges will review abstracts and invite full paper submissions by Friday, October 27, 2023. If your full manuscript is invited, please submit it by Monday, January 1, 2024 (no longer than 5,000 words). Judges will announce three winning papers by Thursday, February 1, 2024.

The winning paper will be published in the Spring 2024 issue of the Southeastern Theological Review. The authors of the top three papers will also win cash prizes ($700, $500, and $300, respectively), and we will publicly recognize the winners at the Exploring Personhood conference in February.

We invite submissions from faculty, PhD students, and ThM students.

About Exploring Personhood: Challenges to Humanity

What challenges do we face as human beings? How does our faith inform our understanding of mental health, identity, technology, life, and civic engagement?

Join us as we advance the conversation at our third-annual Exploring Personhood conference, presented by the L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary on Feb. 21-22, 2024. You’ll hear from George Yancey, Liz Hall, Jacob Shatzer, John Wilsey, and Fuz Rana.

Exploring Personhood: Challenges to Humanity will begin with the authority of the Scriptures and Christian theology. We’ll then invite perspectives from the sociology, psychology, history, science, and ministry. Our aim is to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue on the Imago Dei and embodiment — all for the glory of God and the good of the world.

This conference is part of a larger project titled “Being Human: Theology and Praxis” made possible through the support of a grant from the John Templeton Foundation. We thank the Foundation for its generosity, and we pray that our efforts will prove helpful for facilitating thoughtful dialogue and fruitful ministry.

  • Date: February 21-22, 2024
