Summer Reading List

The Riches of our Theological Heritage: Christy Thornton’s Summer Reading Recommendations

Post Icon

As summer begins, we want to help you craft the perfect Summer Reading List. We asked Southeastern Seminary professors what books they would recommend, and we’ll share their recommendations in coming weeks.

Today, Dr. Christy Thornton recommends two books for your summer reading list.

He reminds us of the riches of our Baptist theological heritage and the formative significance of our regular church practices.

On the Demonstration of Apostolic Preaching
by Ireneaeus

Have you ever wanted for someone to teach you how interpret the Old Testament in a gospel-centered way? Have I got news for you! Irenaeus’s booklet introduces readers to why the Old Testament is the gospel book and why it should be interpreted in a gospel way. After that, he helps readers see the gospel proclaimed across the Scripture. Like any book written in a different place and time, there will be points that contemporary Christians will choose to disagree with, but this book still provides meaningful instruction for how to read the Bible, as it has for the last 1800 years in the history of the church.

Amidst Us Our Beloved Stands: Recovering Sacrament in the Baptist Tradition
by Michael Haykin (Lexham, 2022)

Michael Haykin mines the depths of the Baptist and Reformed traditions to revive among Baptists the significance of God’s presence with his church in the observance of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. In doing so he reminds us of the riches of our Baptist theological heritage and the formative significance of our regular church practices.
