As summer begins, we want to help you craft the perfect Summer Reading List. We asked Southeastern Seminary professors what books they would recommend, and we’ll share their recommendations in coming weeks.

Today, Dr. Kristin Kellen recommends two books for your summer reading list.

He speaks so frankly, yet so humbly and compassionately, about pain and suffering.

Embodied Hope: A Theological Meditation on Pain and Suffering
by Kelly Kapic (IVP, 2017)

You’re Only Human: How Your Limits Reflect God’s Design and Why That’s Good News
by Kelly Kapic (Baker, 2022)

I’ve been thinking on this for the last week to come up with a book, and the one that keeps coming to mind is Kelly Kapic’s Embodied Hope. I really like that he speaks so frankly, yet so humbly and compassionately, about pain and suffering. He shares his and his wife’s experiences with pain and trials, and it’s very relatable. But because it is theological in nature, it grounds hope in the Lord, who is sure and a firm foundation. I have also enjoyed his recent book You’re Only Human, though the reminder of my finitude isn’t always what I want to read. But hopefully that helps, two for the price of one!
