In the conversation about protecting life, we often forget about chemical abortion. What is chemical abortion, and how prevalent is it?
Thankfully, lives are being saved every day as women experience immediate regret from these abortion decisions. And through Abortion Pill Reversal, they are given a second chance to choose life for their child.
But before we talk about the solution, let’s address the problem.
The Hard Realities of Chemical Abortion
Chemical abortion involves the use of two different medications, at two different times, and for two different purposes. Mifepristone is the first drug consumed orally in a chemical abortion regimen. The action of this drug is to block progesterone, the hormone needed to sustain and nurture a pregnancy. This destabilizes the pregnancy and results in the death of the unborn child. The second drug in this regimen is an off-label use of a black box warning medication, Misoprostol, to empty the uterus. Misoprostol is only FDA-approved for use in the prevention of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced gastric ulcers. Sadly, chemical abortions are more common than ever, due to recent actions by the Food and Drug Administration.
The Risk and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) is currently placed on 69 out of 19,000 drugs (regardless of whether they are abortion specific or not) to require acknowledgment of the increased safety risks to ensure these do not outweigh the benefits of their usage. In the past, for example, women were required to receive an in-person physician visit before beginning an abortion. But the FDA recently lifted this precautionary classification. On January 3, 2023, the FDA elected to allow Mifepristone to be dispensed directly to the patient by a prescription from a provider through either an in-person certified pharmacy visit or by mail. The removal of this precautionary classification supersedes significant physical protections for women seeking an abortion as a result of these drugs.
Chemical abortion cases in the United States are increasing to staggering heights while women are often being placed in dangerous situations with little to no medical oversight. Current trends suggest the overall rate of abortions in our nation could include 80% of them being chemical abortions. Meanwhile, the FDA continues to proclaim these abortion drugs pose little to no risk and are safer than Tylenol. Unfortunately, the FDA reports that 5 million women have taken chemical abortion pills. And the numbers could be worse, as abortion reporting is entirely voluntary.[1]
In response to the alarming increase of chemical abortions in our country, as well as the victorious overturn of Roe v. Wade, many states have enacted pro-life laws for the protection of the mother and the unborn baby. Despite these states’ heroic and courageous efforts to protect life, chemical abortion pills are readily accessible to all states through abortion tourism and over 72 unique websites. The organizations represented through these websites share the common mission of providing abortion in areas and nations where it is prohibited by law or not easily accessible.
