As summer begins, we want to help you craft the perfect Summer Reading List. We asked Southeastern Seminary professors what books they would recommend, and we’ll share their recommendations in coming weeks.

Today, Benjamin Quinn recommends three books for your summer reading list.

The Rise and Trumph of the Modern Self
By Carl Trueman (Crossway, 2020)

Quinn: Carl Trueman hardly needs an introduction to evangelical seminarians. In his recent book The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self, Trueman skillfully and winsomely explains the current cultural climate concerning the view of the self, especially in relation to the sexual revolution. In light of the work of Philip Rieff and Charles Taylor, Trueman maps out the historical foundations that led to where we are, and offers thoughtful reflections on where we go from here.   

Simply Trinity: The Unmanipulated Father, Son, and Spirit
By Matthew Barrett (Baker, 2021)

Quinn: A well-written and compelling (while entertaining!) introduction to the doctrine of the Trinity. If you’re intimidated by the mind-numbing introduction to the Trinity, Barrett’s book is accessible, timely and fun to read!

Morning and Evening Prayers
By Cornelius Plantinga (Eerdmans, 2021)

Quinn: Cornelius has for several years been one of my favorite authors for his clarity in writing mixed with depth. Thus, I was thrilled to learn that he published a month’s worth of morning and evening prayers! Unsurprisingly, Plantinga’s prayers are penetrating and practical.  Enjoy!

Associate Director of the L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture

Dr. Quinn is an Associate Professor of Theology and History of Ideas. He also serves as the Associate Director of the L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture. He is the author of Christ, the Way: Augustine's Theology of Wisdom (2022), Walking in God's Wisdom (2021), and the co-author of Every Waking Hour (2016).
